First and foremost: there are no Covid-19 related restrictions in Slovenia anymore!

The event is hosted in and around the National Museum of Slovenia. The focus of your attention will be the Lapidarium Pavilion (1) and the adjacent garden (2), where you will find the logbook, trackable exchange, banner for logging the Locationless cache, Lackeys from the HQ and reviewers meeting point and a shady seating area to relax, geochat and display your geocoin or wood coin collection. The pavilion also hosts two geocaches: a Letterbox and a Virtual cache. You can collect your online purchases near the entrance to the Pavilion.

The event grounds will be open from 9.00 to 18.00:

9.00 – event opens in the Lapidarium pavillion for collection of online purchases and early logbook signing
10.00 – main Museum building opens, Museum Lab Adventure published, event fully open
11.00 – 16.00 guided tours of the museum (book in the Event Store)
13.00-14.45 – Create your SWAG workshops (free, but book in the Event Store)
18.00 main Museum building and Lapidarium Pavilion close, event closes

Signal the Frog is attending the event and will meet the geoLjubljana attendees as he strolls the event grounds several times before and after noon.

Geocaching shops (3) are located on the plateau in front of the Lapidarium Pavilion. Toilets and lockers are located in the main Museum building (4). Visit of the National museum permanent and temporary exhibitions is free for geocachers, who attend the geoLjubljana 2022 and wear the event badge (available at the Slovenski Geocaching klub stall).

Adventure Lab Adventures

Two Adventure Lab adventures will be published for the geoLjubljana 2022 mega event. Tivoli Park adventure will be available on Friday, June 3, in the afternoon. National Museum adventure will be published on Saturday, June 4, at 10.00 as the museum opens. The adventure will feature a self-guided visit with stages at the most important exhibits of the permanent collection of the museum. Wear your event badge for free entrance to the exhibition! Museum adventure will also be available on Sunday, as the permanent exhibition visit is free every first Sunday of the month.

Event cafeteria and dining

The event cafeteria (6) is located across the Tomšičeva street at the Lili Novy Garden (Vrt Lili Novy) cafe in the shady garden of Slovenian PEN center. The cafeteria opens at 10.00. They offer coffee and other refreshing drinks, popular among geocachers, as well as ice cream and some sweet snacks.

If you want more, the dining options in the area between the event grounds and Ljubljanica river are almost endless. There’s something for everyone in the walking distance from the event. Including two grocery shops, where you can get the supplies and have a picnic on the grass in Tivoli park!

Weather and water

We expect a warm, maybe even hot day. No rain. Make sure you have enough water as you venture around Ljubljana. Tap water is excellent and there are public drinking fountains all over the city centre. One of them, on Čopova street, is particularly interesting…

Parking

Suggested parkings are Tivoli I and Tivoli II in the walking distance from the event (see the local map below and event listing for waypoints). Parking is free on Saturday and Sunday, but make sure you arrive early as parkings fill up with the visitors of Tivoli park later in the day. There is a parking garage next to the event (entrance from Šubičeva street) and a parking garage under the Kogresni trg square. Parking in the city centre is convenient, but comes with a price!

Geocaching in Ljubljana

Events are fun, but geocachers also like finding geocaches. The geocaching map of Ljubljana reveals at the first glance that you will have a very busy mega-weekend. There are 51 caches hidden in 1 km around the event grounds 14 traditional caches, 12 multi-caches, 12 mystery caches, 3 EarthCaches, 1 Wherigo cache, and 9 virtual caches (and we are working on providing a Letterbox as well). They will take you to all must-visit points of interest in the city centre like the Old Town and Ljubljanica embankments, Castle Hill, Tivoli Park, Farmer’s market (very lively on Saturday morning), Museum Quarter, Krakovo and Trnovo districts and Roman remains. In this area, you will find 3 of Top 5 most logged caches and 5 of Top 10 most favourited caches in Slovenia, as well as 5 caches from the Slovenian Geocache of the Month list. The oldest caches in the city are on the Castle Hill. There are also at least 9 Adventure Lab adventures with stages in the city centre.

If you broaden your search area, there are at least 380 caches hidden inside the ring motorway or roughly 6 km around the centre of Ljubljana (the Three Bridges on Prešeren Square), including 100+ tradi trail around Ljubljana.

Icon run (10+ cache types in a day)

Are you looking for an icon run of finding at least ten different geocache types in one day? You’ve come to the right place! You can find 5 (and possibly even 6) cache types without leaving the event grounds of the National Museum. Including the Locationless Find Signal the Frog® cache. Other cache types are in walking distance. See the list of our suggestions: coord.info/BMB0T2A. Missing in the list is a Letterbox cache, but rumour has it that it might appear before the Mega-Event. Don’t forget to attend the Saturday evening event to complete the 10 or 11 icon run. Beyond 11 types, you are on your own.

Forget about icons, I want numbers!

»Mad cacher« section of geoLjubljana 2022 Orga-Team is suggesting you take on PST / Trail Along the Wire. It has 100+ traditional caches (and some extra non-trail caches along the way) and circles Ljubljana on the 35-km walking/cycling trail following the layout of the barbed-wire fence that enclosed the city during the WW2 for 1172 days. The trail is divided in sections A-F, each maintained by different geocacher (that meet to discuss maintenance issue every Friday near #F20). All caches have been inspected and fitted with new logbooks in recent days.

North of the city, you can find Povodje trail, Menges – Rasica trail and, a bit further out, Torovo-Voglje trail with its extensive tree-fishing (Biltema) #52-73 section. We should also mention Škofja Loka, a lovely old town with caches and trails around it (POG trail, Zamorček trail and Lubnik trail).

Trail po Ostrovrharjevi poti east of the city is not very well maintained, but it might be worth a visit because of the interesting Millstones Quarry EarthCache and wild blueberries that might be abundant along the trail.

South of the city, you will find the new LJ tekači geo-art from Urh to Orle and older Čemšeniška grajska pot trail that is always in great shape. Further out of the city, look for Angry Bear trail to the summit of Mt. Krim (1107 m), the prominent mountain in the southern skyline.

What about physical/mental challenges?

There are real geocaching challenges in the centre of Ljubljana. Can you find the long multi-caches Kričač/Shoutbox or Ljubljana’s fountains and wells? Both can take you all day. Or you could be the First to Solve and/or First to Find the Search mystery? Do you have the patience to grind through 50 puzzling steps of Fisher’s 50 or figure out the identity of mystery persons in Rock’n’Roll v vsako slovensko vas? Can you solve Puzzle Cache or even Puzzle Cache 2? And using some logic, you can surely solve and log the Railway Museum.

Ljubljanica river is tempting with three T5 caches that (sensible) geoachers can only access by boat. Or by paddleboard, if they take part in our group trip (book 11.00 or 13.00 trip) to Three Bridges cache, hidden on the river in the heart of the Old Town.

For other physical challenges, look for many T5 tree caches around the location of the Early Bird event (or hike to the summit of Šmana gora hill nearby). Venturing into the canyons of Iška and Zala rivers to find Grill Bears and Bear Gills is the ultimate phyisical challenge that will take all day. Don’t do it alone, this is real wilderness with no mobile phone coverage.

While the mega-event is the highlight of the weekend, there are other activities that extend the experience of your visit to the event and Ljubljana. Museum tour and handicaft workshop are located at the venue of the event, the National Museum of Slovenia. The activities are either free or available at a symbolic fee to cover the costs of our partners (but considerably less than booked individually). The number of participants is limited, so reserve your spot early. Other activities will be added when they become available.

Morning run/walk to the Ljubljana Castle

Do you wish to stretch your legs before the Mega-Event? The most enthusiastic geocachers among Ljubljana runners, who also happen to be the most enthusiastic runners among Ljubljana geocachers, are inviting you to join them for a morning run (or walk) to Ljubljana Castle and around the city center. Participation is free.

The circuit starts at Krekov trg (Krek Square) in front of Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, where the participants can perform the logging task for the virtual cache Martin Krpan. Approximately 5,5 km long circuit leads up to the Ljubljana Castle and then descends to Stari trg (Old Square) and continues along Ljubljanica river to Krakovo district. After a short stop for logging tasks of the virtual cache Trnovska cerkev the runners will continue towards the Mega-Event venue and return to the starting point over Tromostovje (Three Bridges) and past the City Hall and Farmer's market. Walking circuit will be adapted to fit the time.

Participants will be grouped according to their preferred pace: faster pace, slower pace and walk.

Paddleboard geocaching on Ljubljanica river

Are you ready to experience geocaching in Ljubljana in an adventurous way? Join the group and paddleboard from Špica to the Three Bridges. We will find and log two T5 river caches and observe the old town from a completely different perspective. The trip takes place only in stable weather and water conditions!

Paddling starts at 11.00 and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Maximum 9 paddlers in the group. Participation fee is 5 EUR per person and includes a paddleboard and a paddle. Payment in cash at the start. This is not a paddleboard course but a group trip of people who have at least basic paddleboard skills. Participation at your own risk. Come in suitable clothing and footwear (you might get wet) and don't forget the supply of water and protection from the sun (head cover and sunscreen). The trip is approximately 1,3 km one way. Ljubljanica is a very slow river, but keep in mind that the return leg is upstream.

Guided tour of the National Museum

The National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest of all Slovenian museum institutions. Many exhibits on display in the permanent exhibition have exceptional significance for a particular period. Among them are Neanderthal flute, the oldest musical instrument in the world, several items discovered in Ljubljana Marshes and Ljubljanica river, situla of Vače, the only Egyptian mummy in Slovenia, gilded bronze Roman statue of Emona citizen, the oldest gold objects discovered in Slovenia and early Middle Age wooden traps.

Tour of the permanent exhibition with focus on museum highlights is organized by the Museum for geoLjubljana 2022. The visit is guided by professional museum guides and takes approximately 1 hour. Maximum 20 people per group. Attendees meet in the lobby of the museum 10 minutes before the scheduled start. Entrance fee 1.50 EUR per person is paid in cash before the start of the tour.

Self-guided and/or Adventure-Lab-guided visit to the permanent exhibition of the Museum will be free for all geoLjubljana 2022 attendees. If you are interested in history from Paleolithic to early Middle Ages, however, we strongly suggest you take the tour. It's worth it!

Additional time slots will be provided in the afternoon if needed.

Create your SWAG workshop

Geocaching exchange items or SWAG ( stuff we all get ) are an almost forgotten aspect of our game. Still, there's a sparkle in the eyes of many geocachers when they open the container and find small usable or decorative items. In this workshop, you will use your handicraft skills and create your own geoLjubljana 2022 souvenir as well as several items that you can use as geocaching SWAG.

The workshop is free, but limited to 25 participants, so you need to book your seat. Children from the age of 5 to 105 are welcome to attend. The organizer provides all the materials. Bring your own handicraft skills; if necessary, the hostesses will be happy to help you discover them (again). Workshop languages: Slovenian, English, some German and the universal language of »demonstrate and immitate«.

geoLjubljana 2022 meets the early birds (GC9QQ9T)

Arriving to geoLjubljana 2022 early? The first event of the mega weekend (GC9QQ9T) is scheduled on Thursday, June 2, from 17.00 to 19.00 in relaxing ambient near the famous Tacen whitewater kayak course. Nearby Šmarna gora hill (Mount Saint Mary) is famous as the most visited mountain in Slovenia, but also for the annual event on the summit and many diverse geocaches. The main grounds, La Bocca pub, has been tested in many events.

What to expect?

Meet the organisers of the mega geocaching weekend for the first time and learn at first hand what is waiting for you. Get geocaching advice and hints from local geocachers. The bravest might have the opportunity to climb a T5 tree using climbing gear. But most of all, you will meet and exchange experiences and trackables with geocachers from near and far. Drinks and food (pizza, burgers, hot dogs and other street food) will be available on location, but you don’t have to order anything to attend.

Where to geocache?

If you are short on time, a few finds are available in the walking distance. The closest cache is waiting just across the bridge over the kayak training course. If you have more time for geocaching, we suggest a hike to the summit of Šmarna gora. The rewards are a letterbox cache and a great view of the entire Ljubljana basin. Choose other geocaching targets from the list.

The area around the event is a paradise for T5 cache lovers. There are several caches in the trees that you can only access using climbing gear on both banks of the Sava river. And a few caches that you can access using a long fishing pole (Biltema).

Other activities

Rent a kayak in the nearby club and paddle upstream on Sava river towards Medvode. It is 6 km one way with a few easy rapids to pass. Rafting descent from Medvode is available for groups. Special offer for geocachers might be available by the time of the event.

Practical information

If you arrive by car on the A2 motorway, take the exit Ljubljana-Šmartno (from the North) or Ljubljana-Brod (from the South). There are two small free parking lots close to the event. You can also park at the parking in Tacen for a small fee. If the parking lots are full, you can find parking elsewhere with a little persistence. From the city centre, you can take the bus line #8 and get off at Tacenski most station (see the timetable back to the city). The ride takes around 30 minutes.

Food (wood oven pizza, burgers, hot dogs and other street food) is available in La Bocca pub. For other dining options, there are a traditional Slovenian food restaurant, two pizzerias and a Tuscany style restaurant nearby.

COVID-19 and geoLjubljana 2022

Covid-19 restrictions are lifting in Slovenia. As of 21 February 2022, the RVT rule (recovered/vaccinated/tested) is no longer required in most public places. Restrictions no longer apply when entering Slovenia. Wearing a mask is no longer mandatory in closed public spaces or on public transport.

The virus has not gone away, though. Please, attend the event only if you are in good health and without symptoms of respiratory disease. Use your common sense to stay safe. We will follow the most current guidance from public health authorities to make sure the event is safe for everyone.

geoLjubljana 2020 vs. Himalayan balsam (GC9R6JA)

We hope you will love your stay in Ljubljana and you will be in the mood to do something good for your host city. Join the CITO event GC9R6JA on Sunday, June 5, from 9.00 to 11.30. To support the City of Ljubljana efforts to clear the public land of invasive plants, we will be removing the Himalayan balsam plant (Impatiens glandulifera) in a heavily affected area along the Sava river at the north-eastern outskirts of the city.

The plant is native to the Himalayas and has been introduced to decorative gardens in the first half of 19th century. Since its escape to the wild, it has spread across much of the Northern Hemisphere. It is considered invasive in many areas and included in the Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species.

Slovenian Geocaching club helped the City of Ljubljana and collected 650 kg of Japanese knotweed for a community project.

What to expect?

A short presentation of Himalayan balsam, other common invasive species and City of Ljubljana efforts to limit their impact on public lands (like the publicly funded APPLAUSE project). Pulling out the plants to the point of satisfying your appetite for destruction in great geocaching company. It’s not hard and it’s fun.

Where to geocache?

We will focus on the CITO activity, but there are a few caches in the area for those that wish to warm-up for the CITO event with a couple of finds.

Other activities

Not many other activities around here. We will focus on the CITO event and try to uproot as many plants as we can.

Practical information

The event will take place in along the Sava river near Sneberje in the area of published coordinates. We will meet in the grounds of the Športni klub Sloga sports club (barrier will be open). There is ample parking and a watering hole for morning coffee and other beverages to quench your thirst on a warm summer morning. The event is conveniently accessible from A1 motorway at the exit no. 26 (Ljubljana-Sneberje). Seneberje is serviced by the public transport bus #12. Unfortunately, the options are very limited on a Sunday morning.

The plants have shallow roots, so they are removed easily by pulling without using much force. The activity is suitable for everyone, as the plants are not toxic or allergenic. No special equipment is necessary, but we advise you to wear outdoor activity clothes and shoes. Protective gloves will be provided by the organisers should you need them.

Meet the local geocachers | Spoznajte naše mega goste

Želimo si, da bi bil naš prvi mega dogodek tudi osebno doživetje. Program dogodkov ni edini, ki zagotovi tako izkušnjo. Velik del pripomorejo medosebni stiki, sploh z domačini. Zato smo razmišljali, da bi obiskovalcem ponudili tudi ta del: spoznati lokalne geolovce in povečati verjetnost, da spletejo nova prijateljstva. Kako? Za vse, ki bi želeli za uro, pol dneva ali cel dan popeljati kakšno tujo geolovsko ekipo po Ljubljani, jih spremiti do zakladkov, ki so vam všeč, ali jim pokazati, kje radi kaj dobrega pojeste, smo pripravili anketo, na podlagi katere bi potem zainteresirane goste skušali povezati z vami. In skupna dogodivščina z novimi prijatelji se bo začela!
